I agree that social networking serves a different purpose than email (email being a truly direct means of one-to-one communication, especially in business). However, I’m not convinced that email hasn’t marginalized the phone much as it has virtually replaced the written letter or postcard. Certainly, in the workplace, most of us now get emails in situations that used to precipitate phone calls. Email is immediate and yet less invasive than calling.
