How to Save a Site to your Personal Computer

  1. Either FTP into your hosting account or use My Network Places on your computer.
    1. For My Network Places, go to Start> My Network Places.
    2. Choose “Add a network place” in the left hand nav.
    3. Choose “Choose another network location” and hit next.
    4. Enter your site’s FTP address (9 out of 10 times it is http://ftp.yoursitename.com). Hit next.
    5. Uncheck “Log on anonymously”. Enter your username (your hosting company will have given this to you or can give this to you). Hit next.
    6. Name the network place for accessing for later. Hit next.
    7. Hit finish.
    8. Enter your FTP password (your hosting company will have given this to you or can give this to you).
    9. You will now be in your hosting account.
  2. Once you are into your hosting account, go to Start> My Computer. Navigate to where you would like to save the site.
  3. Reduce the size of the hosting account window and the My Computer window so that both are visible at the same time on the screen.
  4. In the hosting account window, navigate to your site. The path to your site differs from hosting company to hosting company so we are unable to tell you what your path will be. If your site is not root or top folder, look for folders called www or html. If you find a folder with a file called “index” than you have found the folder with your site.
  5. Drag the folder that has your site in it over to the My Computer window. You computer will copy the whole site over to your computer.
  6. Once the computer is done copying, close both windows.
  7. Open a browser.
  8. Go to File>Open. Navigate to where you saved the site.
  9. Open the index.htm file. Your homepage should open.
  10. You can now navigate on your site on your computer.
